Location - Canning Dock
Canning Dock is the ideal location for HMS WHIMBREL to be berthed in Liverpool, this central location will provide the focal point of the memory of the campaign.
Location is key to the success and future sustainabaiality of HMS WHIMBREL. The issue of location has caused problems for other historic ship project in the area and the project team has worked hard to secure this berth for HMS WHIMBREL. We are very grateful for the support of British Waterways in allowing us the use of this berth and their continued support in the development of this project.
HMS WHIMBREL has been allocated a berth in Canning Dock on the Mersey Waterfront, which is an area of international importance following its designation as a World Heritage Site. Canning Dock is central to a number of new developments which include;
- The Pier Head is the reflection of Liverpool to many people, it combines three of the city's best known and architecturally important buildings - the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Building, collectively known as the Three Graces. The Pier Head is also a focal point for Liverpool's maritime history and played a vital role in both World Wars.
- Liverpool One Project (Paradise Street Development), is a 750m retail, leisure and residential scheme covering 42 acres of the city centre. Located opposite Canning Dock. The scheme is the largest retail-led regeneration project in Europe and will set a benchmark for the next generation of international city centre development. It will provide 1.5m sq ft of retail space as well as hotels, apartments and a multi-screen cinema.
- The development of Mann Island, combining a new Museum of Liverpool, which will showcase Liverpool's history in a striking new building and a mixed-use development which will include leisure space, residential apartments and offices, and major new public spaces. In addition British Waterways canal link project will pass through the site, animating the public spaces.
- Kings Waterfront is the largest development on the Liverpool waterfront. It combines a visitor destination of international quality - the Liverpool Arena and Convention Centre - with a mixed use development of residential, hotel, office, retail, leisure, community and open space uses.
- The Baltic Triangle is an historic port area bordered by Rope Walks, the Paradise Street Project and Kings Waterfront. Currently it contains a large number of small businesses, and has benefited from investment in recent years with the opening of two new hotels and the more recent start on site of a number of residential developments.
The HMS WHIMBREL project will help reinforce the impact of new developments both at the waterfront and within the City centre, improving the overall visitor experience.
